Canada announces new student cap for 2025?

Canada announces new student cap for 2025. This means there will be limitation on number of applications canada will accept in 2025. The Canadian government has capped the number of study permit applications it will process for the rest of 2025 at around 505,162. Any application after reaching the capped number will be not be considered and the fees will be refunded.

This cap is for students application that will be accepted for processing i.e not the permit students will be approved for 2025. So, the visa grant rate will be way lower than the actual capped number.

Reason behind new student cap?

There has been a significant increase in the number of students aspiring to study in Canada. This plan has been introduced mainly to regulate the influx of international students and control the expansion of the temporary resident population. Another key objective is to enable Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to prioritize quality over quantity. Capping the number of student applications will allow IRCC to process applications more efficiently. Learn more about this new student cap .

Impact of canada’s new cap on Nepalese students.

Canada has always been one of the preferred destinations among Nepalese students for pursuing their education. This cap will limit the number of students applying from Nepal to be lower in 2025 compared to previous years. A lot of students’ applications won’t be considered after reaching the capped limit. A lot of students might have to consider other countries as their alternative for study or try again in 2026. If your dream study destination is Canada, make sure to process your application faster without any delays to secure your study permit.

Canada’s Plans for international students in future?

Canada plans to welcome around 305,900 international students between 2025-2027. This goal reflects the number of students physically arriving to study, not the study permit approved. The Canadian government plans on maintaining a sustainable and robust education system.

Difference between application processed and application approved?

A lot of students may have thought the capped number as the number of applications that will be approved in 2025. However, it is not the case, only 505,162 applications will be processed, not guarantee of how many applications will be approved. Even if the approved application is high there is a high chance of visa refusal for a certain number of applications, limiting visa approved to very low.

This year, the application processing target of 550,162 is significantly lower than last year’s goal of 606,250 applications. In 2024, IRCC set a target to approve 364,000 study permit applications. We are hoping that a new approved study permit application will be set around 330,000 for 2025. However, it is up to IRCC to set the study permit target for this year.

SDS program Closed(Student Direct Stream)

On November 8, 2024 Canada discontinued the SDS program. SDS programs used to provide better services and high chances of visa grant rate for certain countries. As the SDS program is now closed, applications from each country will be equally processed. This may impact more visa refusal of students from SDS eligible countries. I believe this chance is certainly positive since all the applications will be now processed equally not having favoured to student’s from specific country.

Canada to focus on In-Demand course?

Canada will now focus mostly on the programs that align with the country’s job market needs. Students will have a high chance of getting their visa if their course is highly in demand in the Canadian job market. The high demand field in Canada includes science, technology and engineering related courses. Students pursuing their further education in the above mentioned fields will have a better chance of getting a visa. On the other hand, courses that have a lower job market and are regarded as lower will have a lower visa grant rate.
